After creating several single portraits I decided to add an extra formal element into the paintings, namely a hand and a telephone in attempt to open up the ideas. This resulted in me carrying this telephone around to various members of my immediate family to pose for a drawing with it. This included my wife, parents, brothers and their spouses, and my in-laws to create something of an intimate family portrait over ten paintings, which were exhibited in Rugby.
I can’t help looking at these paintings of an imaginary telephone conversation with great poignancy now, as they include my younger brother Stu who died of cancer in 2009 aged 36. I will never forget the telephone call I received from my Mom when he was diagnosed, and then taking the call late at night from his wife nearly two years later to hear that he had died.
